James A. Schmidt, 88, Gillett, died suddenly Sunday evening, July 21, 2024 at home, his children came quickly to their mother’s side. He was born April 10, 1936 in Oconto Falls to Arthur and Florence “Flossie” (Sorenson) Schmidt. Jim grew up in the family grocery store in Gillett where he learned the values of working hard, honesty and how to treat people. He attended Gillett Public Schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1954. Two weeks after graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean War. Upon his honorary discharge, he returned to Gillett.
On June 21, 1958 he married Patricia Kuehn at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. The couple have lived in Gillett all their married lives where they raised four children. Jim retired from Seneca Foods in Gillett after many years of dedicated work. Jim enjoyed frequent trips to the casino, gardening, following all sports and caring for his family.
Survivors are his wife, Patricia Schmidt, Gillett; their four children, Karen Haws, Daniel (Julaine) Schmidt, all of Green Bay; Patti (Jim) Cox, Stoughton; Amy (Romy) Schmidt, Kelly Lake; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Jacob) Rader and Keri (Bruce) Haws; twins Jacob (Allie) and Nicholas (Brittany) Cox; five great grandchildren, Caleb, Hailey, Lillian and Giovanni Rader; Quinn Cox; special friend and neighbor, Gary Jaeger; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Arthur Neil, one son-in-law Bruce Haws and step-granddaughter Kerri Pieschek-Ingersoll.
Visitation with the urn present will be held after 9:00 AM Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Gillett until the time of service. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at the church with Pastor Chris Byars officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Wanderers Rest Cemetery in Gillett.
